13. Internationaler Kongress für Lutherforschung: Seminar 10

Gordon Jensen
Religious colloquies of the 1520s and 1530s
Religionsgespräche in den 20er und 30er Jahren des 16. Jahrhunderts

This seminar will provide a forum to re-examine and discuss the religious colloquies that arose in the 1520s and 1530s, in order to heal some of the fractures among the various reformation movements. While the religious colloquies of Marburg (1529) and Wittenberg (1536) are important in this time span, there will also be opportunity for participants to explore other colloquies held in this time frame, (for example, the “colloquy” or discussions that led to the Christmas Articles of 1535). Further, while much attention has focused on disagreement over the Lord’s Supper, it is expected that this seminar will also explore how participants in the various colloquies dealt with baptism, confession/absolution, and other, often divisive, matters. What ideas and events provided ‘breakthroughs’ or ‘retrenchment’ for the colloquy? What role did pressure from civil authorities have in encouraging or hindering theological agreement? It is expected that each participant will be prepared to submit a paper or presentation outline to the seminar leader prior to the congress for distribution to the participants, and to aid in the organizing of the seminar for the week.
